Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Banner Elk, North Carolina, Grandfather Vineyard and Winery offers an exceptional experience for any wine enthusiast.
A great reason to visit is its beautiful location. Situated at the base of Grandfather Mountain and beside the Watauga River the winery boasts beautiful mountain views. So whether you are sipping wine on the terrace, sitting on the Adirondack chairs by the river, or taking a walk through the vineyard, you are sure to enjoy the quaint beauty of the Blue Ridge.
The BEST part of any winery visit in my opinion is, of course, the wine! Grandfather Vineyard prides itself on producing high-quality wines. From crisp whites to bold reds to sparkling wines their diverse selection offers something for everyone. I am personally fond of the oaked Chardonnay and the New Zealand inspired Sauvignon Blanc. Do be sure to try their unique sparkling wines as well! I am a big fan of the Blue Ridge Brut. It is similar to a dry champagne with notes of green apple and apricot. The Dry Sparkling Rose is also a good choice! The tasting room manager has said, “If there are bubbles in your glass it’s a good day.” I agree!
Once you get your wine the next thing you will want to do is sit down and enjoy it. It is a good thing Grandfather Vineyard has a lot of options! This is important if you come with a group of friends. The last thing you want is trouble finding a place to sit back and enjoy. If you come with a small group or with one other person I would recommend sitting by the river. The chairs are grouped together under the trees so that you have the most amount of privacy. If you come with a larger group I cannot recommend the couches enough! They are situated underneath a tent outside on the side of the winery. Not only are they comfortable, but they offer such a lovely environment for your whole party to enjoy.
Should you visit around lunchtime or want to pair some cheese and crackers with your wine the vineyard has excellent choices for that too. They offer locally made charcuterie boards, a large variety of individual cheeses and crackers, and snacks. If you are hankering something a little more substantial they are frequented by a food truck from May-October, Wednesday-Sunday.
Next, it could just be the stage of life we are in, but any place that is family friendly is a place I want to go! That being said, Grandfather Vineyard is a place for everyone, big and little. While you sip on your wine your kids can play in the river, hike in the vineyard, or sip on their own special drink! Grandfather Vineyard offers alcohol free drinks like muscadine grape juice, apple cider, and a full mocktail menu that just started this past summer.
If that is not enough to get you headed there now then you should also know that throughout the year the vineyard hosts events from live music performances to special wine releases. The music genre varies upon the band there, but often includes Appalachian mountain music, old time country, and bluegrass. Check the calendar on their website to plan your visit around activities that interest you. It’s an excellent way to experience the Appalachian culture and create lasting memories with anyone you bring with you!
Interested in seeing more of the mountains? There are good hiking options nearby! Otter Falls is a .9 mile moderate hike with a nice waterfall view. Grandfather Mountain is also nearby that has a mile high swinging bridge and some of the best views in the area! Looking for a nice meal? I would recommend Reid’s Cafe, Over Yonder Restaurant, and The Speckled Trout. They are good local spots sure to impress you and your party! Is shopping more up your alley? Be sure to check out The Twisted Twig Antiques or Banner Elk Shirt Company for your local soaps, jewelry, and shirts.
If you would like to make a day trip out of your visit or even a few hours, consider booking a wine tour with Van In Black! We take care of the transportation so you can focus on enjoying the winery and other attractions to the fullest.
